Introduction to Poker

Poker is a kind of gambling game even if the poker players feel that poker is different than other gambling games. Poker games vary depending on several factors like how hands are formed, dealing of cards, bet limits and number of betting rounds allowed.

History

Poker is evolved from card games played in many European countries. The name Poker derives from the eighteenth century French game named poque and a German game named Pochspiel. Both games have some bluffing techniques. However, the origin of the name Poker may come from the underworld thieves, because “poke” is a slang term generally used by pickpockets. The origin still continues to be a matter of discussion.

Poker Terms

Poker Hand: A card combination that a player holds.
Split Pot: If two poker players have the same combination of cards, the pot is equally divided between them.
Play: One round i.e. from one shuffle to the next.
Ante: An enforced bet made by all the poker players before the cards are dealt. Ante encourages action in poker.
Poker Pot: Pot is the place where all the players put their money when they bet. The winner of the round takes the pot.
Rake: Rake is the commission charged by the poker room for every hand played. It is a percentage of the pot in a given hand. It is a source of revenue for the poker room.
Showdown: After the last betting round all players show their cards, compare their hand and decide the winner. This is called showdown.

Betting

Call: To call a bet means to put an amount equal to the bet amount put by an other player into the pot. For example, if John puts $5 into the pot and Mac wants to call the bet, he has to put $5 into the pot.
Fold: A player folds his hand when he discards his cards. For example, if John bets $5 and Mac doesn't want to call, Mac folds and will not be able to continue in the current round.
Raise: Raise means to put a bet greater than the bet amount into the pot. For example, if John bets $5 and Mac wishes to raise John’s bet, he puts more than $5 into the pot.
Check: If there is no previous bet in the round, a player may pass his turn without betting. In other words, the player bets zero. This is known as a check.
